SAP SAPPHIRE NOW and ASUG Annual Conference recap with Approyo CTO Sean Gilmour

My first SAP SAPPHIRE NOW as a member of the Approyo team is in the books. Our CEO Chris Carter shared some of his thoughts in a earlier blog. Here are my main talking points coming out of the 2019 SAP SAPPHIRE NOW and ASUG Annual Conference

The move to SAP HANA is accelerating

One of the main topics many customers and partners were talking about, was around realizing the growing need to move to HANA and S/4HANA soon rather than later. This is a big shift from previous years where companies just weren't ready to really upgrade or migrate. With the deadline moving ever closer. Now companies are trying to figure out how to get there with a lot more urgency. There is an ever increasing gap between customers needing to migrate and the number of experienced teams that can help. I believe we at Approyo are ideally and uniquely placed to help an ever-growing number of SAP customers with these migrations and upgrades:

  • Provide experience around landscape audits, as well as guidance around new features and functions.

  • Not everything is available in S/4HANA yet, so what can / should you actually move right now?

  • With the ever-increasing popularity of the Hyperscalers, what is the right home for your landscapes? On-premise or in a cloud provider ?

  • Migrations are always a hot topic, is it simple lift and shift, or do we need full data migration.

A very busy SAP SAPPHIRE NOW and ASUG Annual Conference

While I am always skeptical around the announced attendance numbers ( 30K according to Bill ), it was one of the busiest SAPPHIRE’s I have seen in a while. We had a lot more meetings, and deep conversations this year, compared to previous years. The new updated layout for the show floor seemed to push more people to partner booths, but the SAP booths didn't seem as busy, I'm not sure if that was on purpose, or if it was because of the lack of new major announcements.

Lack of huge announcements from SAP

Aside from a lot of talk around SAP Experience Management - X data and O Data, as discussed in Chris’ blog, there weren’t many game-changing announcements from SAP.

As always, everyone was waiting for a big announcement for Vora or Datahub. Customers were left scratching their heads around the lack of news around IoT and the ever-expanding selection third-party apps in the SAP ecosystem. Maybe this was by design, with SAP wanting the third-party vendors to step up, by providing more focus on their announcements, plus add more depth and value to the landscape. I think most customers were expecting a little more from the SAP leadership team at the event. Hopefully Tech-Ed in the fall will address that, so we will see you all in Vegas.
